Osaka
Osaka is a loud, direct city, which makes the quiet start worthwhile. A private tea ceremony with a practising host takes about an hour, and you are shown the movements rather than watched performing them.
From there the day widens out: the castle and its park, the covered arcades, and Dotonbori once the signs come on.
Hour by hour
Kyoto hotels are also fine, with a small adjustment to the timings.
A tatami room with a practising host. Around an hour, seating on chairs available on request.
The reconstructed keep, the enormous stone walls and the moat walk.
Okonomiyaki cooked at the table, or a halal-friendly restaurant arranged in advance.
The pre-war amusement district, kushikatsu shopfronts and the old tower.
A covered kilometre of shops, with a rest and coffee midway.
The Glico sign, the canal reflections and the street-food lanes behind the main strip.
Back to your hotel, or left in Namba for dinner.
Where you'll go
All year. Cherry blossom in the castle park is exceptional in early April.
Moderate. The castle park and the arcades are the longest stretches, both flat.
The arcades and the tea room cover a good part of the day in rain.
